Every spring, central Texas puts on a show that’s hard to describe. Bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, evening primrose: the roadsides and open fields erupt in color, and the area around Lake Somerville is no exception.
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to finally make the trip, this is it. The wildflower window typically runs from late March through mid-April, and it lines up with some of the best weather of the year: warm afternoons, cool nights and low humidity before summer sets in.
Where to see them near the park
The roads around the lake are a good place to spot color. Early morning light hits the fields beautifully, so bring a camera. The Nails Creek Unit of Lake Somerville State Park also has hiking trails, including the Lake Somerville Trailway, which makes a good morning walk.
Make a weekend of it
Spring weekends at the lake fill up. The combination of wildflower season, mild temperatures and good fishing makes late March and early April some of our most popular dates of the year.
Spend the morning hiking and photographing the blooms. Head back to the lake for an afternoon on the water. End the day with a fire at your cabin or campsite while the temperature drops and the stars come out. That’s a pretty good weekend by anyone’s measure.
