Best Time to Visit Lake Somerville: A Season-by-Season Guide

People ask us this more than almost anything else, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you want from the lake. Overlook Park & Marina is open year-round, and the water is best March through November. The rest of the year has its own appeal. Here is how we think about each season, in general terms, so you can pick your dates.

Everything below is a general picture of Texas seasons, not a forecast. Check the weather the week you travel.

Spring: March through May

Spring is when the park wakes up. Days get longer, the grass greens, and wildflowers show up along the roads and open ground around the lake. It is a good season for hiking, bank fishing, and paddling a kayak along the shoreline. Water time starts in March, and by late spring the lake is ready for boating and paddling.

Weekends fill earlier once the weather turns, so book ahead if you have a date in mind.

Summer: June through August

Summer is lake season. Swimming, tubing, the sandbar beach, and long evenings on the water are what most families picture, and the water is at its best. Texas summers are hot, so plan around it: get on the water early, find shade in the afternoon, and save the evening for the golf cart, the playground, and sunsets.

This is also the busiest stretch, especially holiday weekends. Weekends have a 2-night minimum, and holiday weekends have a 3-night minimum. If you want a specific cabin or RV site, reserve early.

Fall: September through November

Many regulars will tell you fall is the sweet spot. The heat eases, evenings cool off, and the water stays inviting into October. Campfire weather arrives, and the lake takes on a slower pace. It is a good time for a quiet weekend or a longer RV stay. We wrote more about it in our fall camping guide.

Our fall hours started October 1: Sunday through Wednesday 6am to 6pm, and Thursday through Saturday 6am to 10pm. Hours change with the season and holidays, so call (979) 289-2321 to confirm.

Winter: December through February

Winter is the quietest season. It is cooler, the lake is still, and the park is calm. Pack layers and expect a different kind of trip: a cabin with a kitchenette, a quiet morning with coffee, a walk along the shore. The water is not at its best, so think of winter as a getaway rather than a swim trip.

How to choose

  • Swimming, tubing, and the beach: March through November.
