A Lake Cabin Rental Near Houston for a Weekend That Does Not Feel Rushed

If you are searching for a lake cabin rental near Houston for the weekend, the drive is usually what talks people out of it. Nobody wants to spend half of Saturday in the car and half of Sunday getting home. Overlook Park & Marina on Lake Somerville is about 1.5 hours from Houston. Leave after work on Friday, and you can be unpacking a cooler into a cabin fridge before the sun is all the way down.

A cabin near Houston, minus the long drive

About 1.5 hours is a different kind of trip than three hours. It is short enough to decide midweek and be at the lake by Friday night. It does not need a week of packing lists. Just the cooler, the swimsuits, and whoever is coming.

We are on Lake Somerville in Brenham, Texas: 138 acres, two miles of lake frontage, and three calm coves. The lake itself is about 11,000 acres.

What you are renting

Our cabins are honest. They were built in 1969, so they are cozy and wood-paneled, not fancy. What they do well is make a weekend easy.

  • Five cabins, A through E
  • Sleep up to six
  • Two queen beds and one bathroom
  • A kitchenette, with linens, dishes, towels, and a coffee maker included (Cabin E has a full kitchen)
  • Views over the lake and the sunsets
  • Extra linen sets are $20 if your group is bigger

A kitchenette means you do not have to eat out for every meal, and Cabin E goes further with a full-size fridge, stove and oven. Cook breakfast before anyone is fully awake, keep drinks cold, and skip the cooler refill run. Ice is $3 and firewood is $6.50 a bundle at the marina store. Fires go in the fire rings and are never left unattended.

What it costs

Cabin rates are from $120 a night. This fall, every night is $120. From January 8, 2027, Friday and Saturday nights are $150, and holiday weekends are $175. Weekends have a two-night minimum and holiday weekends have a three-night minimum. Check-in is 3:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM.

Pets are welcome in all lodging, including cabins, for $10 per pet per night (two maximum).

The view does some of the work

Every evening of a two-night stay comes with a view of the lake. Coffee in the morning, dinner as the sun drops, a quiet last half hour before bed with the water going dark. You do not have to plan an activity around it.

Good for couples, good for families

A cabin is the easy version of a weekend away for a couple: no tent to pitch, no site to set up. For a family or small group, it is the version that gives everyone room, with real beds, a kitchenette, and a place to come back to after the lake.

The rest of the weekend

You do not need an itinerary, but the lake gives you plenty.

  • On the water. The public ramp is $10 to launch. The marina has the only on-water fuel station on Lake Somerville. Kayaks, canoes and paddle boards are $50 a day. See the marina page.
  • On land. Four-seat golf carts are $50 a day. There is a playground among the oaks and a covered pavilion with grills. The park map shows where everything is.
  • Fishing. Check Texas Parks and Wildlife for license rules before you cast.

Fall is a good time for a short cabin trip from Houston. The heat backs off, and the evening light is worth the drive.

Planning the trip

Cabins book up on weekends, so lock in dates once you have them. Wi-Fi is at the gatehouse, marina store, and cabins, and cell service is great across the park. Fall hours: Sunday through Wednesday 6am to 6pm, Thursday through Saturday 6am to 10pm. Our park policies cover cancellations and quiet hours.
