Camping Near College Station: Lake Somerville Is About 45 Minutes Away

If you live in or around College Station and have not made it out to Lake Somerville yet, the thing that usually surprises people is how close it is. Overlook Park & Marina is about 45 minutes from College Station. That is close enough for a weeknight escape, not just a planned weekend.

Why a 30-minute drive changes the trip

Most camping trips worth taking mean enough driving that you have to commit to the whole weekend. Lake Somerville changes that math. You can leave after work on a Friday and still have daylight when you pull in. You can do a one-night stay between busy weeks without losing a day to the road. A last-minute Saturday you decide on over breakfast is actually realistic.

For reference, from Overlook: about 1.5 hours from Houston, about 1.5 hours from Austin. College Station is the closest of the big cities.

Where to stay

Overlook Park & Marina has been on Lake Somerville since 1970. We have 138 acres, two miles of lake frontage, and three calm coves, with over 100 RV sites, cabins, boat rentals, and all the other fun stuff we have going on. For a short trip from College Station, most people pick one of three options.

RV sites. 30-amp sites are $40 a night and 50-amp sites are $50, both with electric and water. Full Hookup sites are $65 and are the only ones with sewer. There is a dump station on the property. Check which type you are booking before you head out.

Cabins. Our five cabins (A through E) sleep up to six. Each has two queen beds, one bathroom, and a kitchenette, with linens, dishes, towels, and a coffee maker included. They were built in 1969, so they are cozy and wood-paneled, and they look out over the lake. Cabins are from $120 a night. This is the no-towing, no-setup option. See the cabins and stays page.

Tent sites. $35 for a site with electric and water, or $30 for primitive.

Weekends have a two-night minimum and holiday weekends have a three-night minimum. Check-in is 3:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM. Pets are welcome in all lodging for $10 per pet per night, two maximum.

What to do once you are here

You do not need a packed itinerary for a trip this close. That is the point. The lake gives you plenty to fill an evening or a full weekend.

Fish it. Lake Somerville draws anglers who like a short drive. Bass, crappie, white bass, and catfish are commonly fished here. Check Texas Parks and Wildlife for license rules before you go.

Get on the water. Our public boat ramp is $10 to launch, and the marina has the only on-water fuel station on Lake Somerville. Kayaks, canoes and paddle boards are $50 a day. See the marina page.

Cruise the park. A four-seat golf cart is $50 a day. The playground sits among the oaks, and the sandbar beach is a favorite for families.

Do nothing, well. Campfires, a walk along the shoreline, a slow morning with coffee. Firewood is $6.50 a bundle at the marina store.

A good fit for the College Station crowd

Maybe you are a student who needs a break that does not take the whole weekend. Maybe you are a family in Bryan or College Station who wants a lake trip without a long drive, or you tow a boat and want a launch close to home. The short distance is the appeal. It also works for family visiting from out of town who want somewhere to stay with a kitchenette and some room to spread out.

Planning the trip

Fall hours began October 1: the park, gatehouse, marina store, and ramp are open Sunday through Wednesday 6am to 6pm and Thursday through Saturday 6am to 10pm. Wi-Fi is at the gatehouse, marina store, and cabins, and cell service across the park is great. Our address is 505 Marina Rd, Brenham, TX 77833. See Plan Your Visit for directions, then book your stay or call (979) 289-2321.

About 45 minutes out, and it stops feeling like College Station. Lake life. Lasting memories.
