If you’ve spent any time searching for RV camping near Houston, you already know the challenge. Most of what shows up is a concrete storage yard near the highway, a cramped park squeezed between strip malls, or a state park that has been booked out for months. None of those are what you had in mind when you bought the RV.
Here is a spot a lot of Houston-area RVers haven’t gotten around to trying yet: Overlook Park & Marina (formerly Lake Somerville Marina & Campground), a family-friendly lake park on Lake Somerville in Brenham, Texas. It is about 1.5 hours from Houston, and it gives you shade trees, green grass and the lake right there.
Plan your stay or book your stay whenever you’re ready.
How far is Lake Somerville from Houston?
This is usually the first question, so here is the direct answer. Overlook Park & Marina is about 1.5 hours from Houston. Take US 290 West toward Brenham, then put 505 Marina Rd, Brenham, TX 77833 in your GPS for the final stretch.
That makes it a Friday-after-work drive. Leave Houston at 5:30, make one stop for snacks, and you can be setting up camp by early evening. No full vacation day burned, no cross-state haul.
For reference, here is how the park sits relative to other Texas cities:
- College Station: about 45 minutes
- Houston: about 1.5 hours
- Austin: about 1.5 hours
One note for your GPS: use 505 Marina Rd, Brenham, TX 77833. The Army Corps of Engineers runs a separate public park nearby that is also called “Overlook Park,” and some maps send people there by mistake.
What to expect at an Overlook RV site
Overlook Park & Marina is a private, family-friendly lake park with over 100 RV sites, cabins, boat rentals, and all the other fun stuff we have going on. It is clean, well kept and relaxed: an easygoing basecamp on the water.
Hookups: what each site has
Not every site has the same hookups, so here is how it breaks down:
- Standard RV sites (30 amp or 50 amp): electric and water.
- Full Hookup sites: electric, water and sewer.
- Dump station: on the property, for sites without a sewer connection.
Many sites sit close to the water, and there are shade trees and mown grass throughout the grounds. Tell us what you’re towing when you call or book, and we’ll help you pick a good fit.

Longer stays
If a weekend doesn’t feel like enough, and it often doesn’t once you’re there, ask us about a longer stay. Snowbirds, remote workers and anyone who wants a lakeside home base for a few weeks are welcome to call us at (979) 289-2321 and talk it through.
Amenities you will actually use
- Bathhouse with showers and restrooms
- Direct lake access for fishing, swimming and boating
- A public boat ramp on the property
- Wi-Fi at the gatehouse, marina store and cabins, and great cell service across the park
- Shore fishing access
- Pets welcome, $10 per pet per night, two pets maximum
- Lake Somerville State Park trails nearby
The short version: it’s comfortable. Not overproduced, just genuinely comfortable, the kind of setup that lets you focus on the lake instead of logistics.
Things to do at Lake Somerville during your RV stay
The lake itself is the main attraction. Lake Somerville covers about 11,000 acres, which means room to spread out whether you’re fishing, boating or just floating.
- Fishing: The lake is known for largemouth bass, white bass and catfish. Shore access and a boat ramp are both on the property.
- Boating and kayaking: Launch from the park’s ramp ($10 launch fee), or rent a kayak, canoe or paddle board for $50 a day each.
- Swimming: Take a dip right from the property.
- Hiking: Lake Somerville State Park’s trailway system is nearby, with miles of trails through open prairie and woodland.
- Birdwatching: The lake and surrounding habitat attract a wide variety of migratory and resident birds.
- Stargazing: Get away from the Houston light dome and the nights are genuinely dark.
There is enough to fill a long weekend without leaving the lake, and enough variety that repeat visits never feel the same.
